Licking County Players Theater Newark Ohio
|
The theater started its long life as a funeral home. It was known as the Chris Brothers
funeral home. In it's years, it has seen death many times. After years as a funeral home it
was transformed into the local Salvation Army. As you can imagine, the building saw its
share of pain and sadness. This historic building became the theater for the Licking County
Players a few years back.
We arrived at the theater around 8:30. We unloaded our bags and snacks in the front lobby. This
was to be the safe room for the night. We had couches, chairs, and a couple of tables. There were
bathrooms available as well.
Dennis Kohler, Trevor's Dad, was our guide for the night. He took us on a short tour of the building,
filling us in on the hot spots and stories of the ghosts. We started in the lobby we were using as our
safe room. One of the actors recently passed on in that very room. They had just finished a show
and were greeting audience members when the gentleman collapsed on the floor and died. He had
a heart-attack. They say you can feel him in the room, greeting you and thanking you for your
attendance.
We then headed into the theater itself. We went through a metal door, meant to keep sound out
during shows. Dennis flipped on the lights. The walls of the theater we blue, as were the seats. It
was small, but large enough. Along the back wall, where the door was located, was the sound box.
Dennis told us that they hear things being moved around in the box, and sometimes the lights will
come on. When they go to investigate, there is no one or no thing there. On the stage itself, they
see and hear things moving about, carrying on their own acts.
To the left of the stage is a door that leads to the back of the building. There are stairs the lead to
the second story. Past the stairs are doors to your right that lead to a kitchen and large open area.
This is the backstage area where the actors are during their off stage time. To the back of this
room are doors that lead to the prop building room. Dennis tells us that this is where the most
activity takes place. Tools are moved around, door swing shut, and cold drafts abound. This is
also the former garage where the ambulances dropped off the bodies for funeral preparation. It
was in this area that someone decided to name the ghost, Chris.
We went back out to the back stairs and headed up. Upstairs there were a lot of practice rooms
and storage rooms. The most intriguing room we thought at first was the makeup room. This is the
former prep room for the bodies during the funeral home days. The walls and ceiling were tiled.
This was incase blood or other body fluids managed to find their way on the walls or ceiling.
We continued on the last leg of our tour. There was a library and more storage rooms towards the
front of the building. Dennis said this area was an apartment when the funeral home occupied the
building. To the front of the building was another stair case that led back down to our safe room.
Back at the safe room, we had a short meeting. We decided that we would place a video recorder
in the body prep room, as it was by far the oddest of all the rooms. We placed one audio recorder
in one of the storage closets where objects are often moved about and one in the prop building
room. We hope that we are able to catch something in one of these locations. The other video
camera would be carried by Brad.
