We arrived at the Reformatory at around 7:15
or so. We had to wait outside the gate until
around 7:45ish. When we arrived we loaded
up and went through the sign in process. We
were given time to view the museum where a
replica of "Old Sparky" resides. There was a
gift shop where a couple of shot glasses were
purchased. After a short "rally" outside
explaining the rules and such, we were taken
inside for a short tour. Our guide, Scott, has
been volunteering for 6 years and has
acquired some 2000 hours of video. He said
that through cutting it up, he has around 2
hours of full paranormal things, ranging from
orbs and mists to EVP's and full apparitions.
After our tour we were free to roam until dawn.
They turned out all the lights at 9. We were to
meet again at 11:30 for pizza and pop. And so
our investigation starts....
We first hit the West cell block. We took a ton of pictures of this incredible structure. The cell block stands
6 stories tall and is the tallest free standing cell block in the world. It is hard to imagine prisoners stacked
on top of each other in this steal cage! In some of the cells we found personal items that belonged to
some of the prisoners. We found books and even a shoe. In one we found math home work and a book
titled "The Great Executive Dream." Inside the cells were bunks a toilet and a sink. Some cells had two
sets of bunk, most just had one. We thought we would write down the cells that we had felt, seen, or heard
things in. As it turns out, almost every cell we can to had something in it.
We then headed to the shower room where our famous ghost photo was snapped. We caught several
orbs in this room as well. This was a very large shower room. The showers themselves were nothing more
than piping running in a rectangle above drains. When you walked under the showers you could feel the
water hitting you as if you were actually showering. You could feel temperature changes, from hot to cold.
You could feel the pressure of the water on your skin and clothing.
At this point we headed to the "Jesus Room". This room once held a nine foot tall mural of Jesus. It is now
nothing more than his head and left arm. We did not feel much of anything in this room.
We went up another level to what we call the room above the Jesus room. It is, you guessed it, above the
Jesus room! This was a large empty room. There was a door in the back left corner that led to a spiral
stair case. This led up to the West guard tower. Brad and Michael disappeared up these stairs to check
things out. The remaining three did check out an odd room built along the back wall of the room. It
appeared to be a bathroom. There was a row of toilets and a row of sinks.
It was time for pizza so we headed back out, checking out the Godsmack cells and the Lil' Wayne cell.
After a dinner of pizza and cookies, we headed back in. We went to the shower room on the East cell
block. This is the room where the shower scenes from Shawshank were filmed. This room was not a
large, but was many many times more menacing. Trevor was highly uncomfortable in this room. He kept
saying how he felt as if someone wanted him out of that room. Amy and Clair had their hair pulled in the
room as well. We took a break for about fifteen minutes and sat in silence. The night was beginning to
wear on us, seeing as how we were running up and down stairs, with no direction! We needed a game
plan! We did manage to catch more orbs in this room.
We headed back out into the cell block. There was a door just a little further down from the shower room
and we went in to check it out. This was the former commissary where inmates could buy things such a
snacks. It was now full of old toilets, sinks, foot lockers, and desks. There were more personal items
inside these lockers and desks. We found an odd box type room that we believe was a freezer.
We continued on down the cell block back to the "bull pen". This is where prisoners were first brought in.
We went down one hallway and ended up in a place that we really weren't sure what it was. We believe it
is the old cafeteria and possibly garages. We weren't sure though.
We headed back towards the bull pen and went to solitary. This area has become known as "The Hole".
This is where prisoners were sent for different infractions. In the hole, they would sometimes raise the
temp to 89 degrees and then lower it to 60 degrees. It was their own way of keeping the prisoners under
control. The cells were meant to hold one prisoner. But there were times when two or three prisoners
would have to share one solitary cell. Some of these cells had solid steel doors, some did not. In the solid
doors, there were slots for their food to be slid through.
At the end of the solitary block were stairs that led to the visitation area. There was a glass partition and
telephones still in place. We even found a list of inmates that were release on one day.
From here, we headed back up to the main guard room and into the administration building.
This is where the wardens and their families lived. There was essentially apartments for them to live in.
There were also offices in this area. There is the room where the warden shoots himself in Shawshank,
and the desk from the movie is still in that room.
One of the wardens who worked there, his wife was accidentally shot. She was getting a hat box down out
of a closet and the warden's gun was on top of the box and it feel as she was pulling the box down. It went
off and shot her in the chest. She died a few days later in the hospital. Another warden had a heart
attack here.
We checked out several rooms and found some well hidden rooms that you had to practically suck in your
gut to get to! There were bathrooms as big a bedrooms there too. In one room, there was children's
wallpaper that had been covered over.
We decided we were going to go back in to the prison and check out a few places again.
We went back to the shower room where Amy took her photo. We were ready to drop at this point, but
wanted to stick it out longer. We all pulled up buckets and old wire spools and plopped down for a rest.
We sat there talking and taking in the atmosphere of the entire room.
We left there and went back to the Jesus room. Here we all sat down on random things, the floor, stairs,
whatever was available. We shot some random pictures of each other and the walls.
For some reason, we pushed ourselves even more and went to the room above the Jesus room again.
Here, we took more photos. We captured orbs and tired CORUPT members.
After a while, we decided to call it a night and started the long walk back to the car.
We took more pictures of the remodeled cells and of each other. We made it back to the car around 4:30
am. We packed up and headed home, thankful for the chance to rest, sorry to leave such an amazing
place behind.
